The Official Theatrical Trailer: Ai Weiwei: “Never Sorry
“Films From The New York Times’s Op-Docs”
IFC Center Presents Big-Screen Premieres of Short Documentaries From The Times’s New Video Initiative in Ongoing “Short Attention Span Cinema” Program, April 20-July 12
“Films from The New York Times’s Op-Docs,” a twelve-week series of short documentaries from The Times’s new video initiative, plays April 20-July 12 as part of IFC Center’s ongoing “Short Attention Span Cinema” program. Shorts in the program will screen before all IFC Center’s regular features. The series kicks off April 20 with a two-week presentation of the Academy Award-winning director Errol Morris’s Kennedy conspiracy-theory investigation The Umbrella Man; later selections will play for one week each. The program also includes a special evening screening and discussion with filmmakers from the Op-Docs initiative and guests from the New York Times editorial staff in June. The schedule for the first half of the series is below; titles and schedule for the second half, along with special event details, will be announced in May.
Begun in November 2011, The New York Times’s Op-Docs series invites both renowned and emerging filmmakers to contribute new short opinion documentaries reflecting a wide range of styles and subject matter, including current affairs, contemporary life and historical subjects. “The New York Times is thrilled to collaborate with the IFC Center to bring our new Op-Docs initiative to the big screen, presenting our digital short films for the first time to theatrical audiences,” said Jason Spingarn-Koff, series producer and curator of Op-Docs for The New York Times. “This is a special opportunity to pay tribute to our talented Op-Docs filmmakers and to showcase the artistic caliber of their work.”
With the Op-Docs shorts, IFC Center continues its recent focus on new and topical work in “Short Attention Span Cinema,” following the premieres of Jem Cohen’s “NEWSREELS: Reports from Occupy Wall Street” this past fall. The ongoing program, initiated with the opening of the theater in 2005, screens short films before the theater’s regular features, every day of the year. Past editions have spotlighted shorts from festivals like Slamdance and Doxita, as well as work by Jay Rosenblatt, DA Pennebaker, Jeff Scher, Emily Hubley, Guy Maddin, James Nares, Isabella Rossellini and others.
